--------------------

We are looking for graduate students and early career researchers to participate as watchstanders on an upcoming expedition to the south Atlantic Ocean on the R/V Marcus Langseth. Watchstanders will gain experience in the acquisition and processing of seismic reflection data, refraction data from ocean bottom seismometers (OBS), and multibeam bathymetry. Watchstanders are expected to be active participants in the deployment of the marine geophysical equipment and processing of incoming data, as well as stand observer watches in the seismic lab. Participants will sail from Praia, Cape Verde Islands on Jan 1 and return to the same port on Feb 22 to port. Flights will be slightly before and after those dates. Travel costs to and from Cape Verde will be provided.

This imaging study will focus on variability in the creation of oceanic crust at one ridge segment over ~70 million years. We will image (with seismic reflection data, MCS) over 1500 km of crust from the mid-Atlantic Ridge west to the Rio Grande Rise. Along that transect we will have five MCS crosslines that coincide with OBS drops, which will allow us to collect crustal refraction data.

We are looking for students/researchers who are interested in the above science, interested in performing the above type of work, and who are excited about the opportunity to be at sea for an extended period of time. No prior experience is required, but you must be reliable, hard working, and willing to live in close quarters at sea. If you are interested, please send your CV and a one page statement of interest to Bobby Reece at Texas A&M University: b.reece at tamu.edu. Deadline- Oct. 15. Preference given to US applicants.
