Hello Geology alumni,

I have been contacted by a graduate student who is doing some research on curriculum and work-related experiences in the geosciences, who is attempting to gather data on the use of math skills and concepts for early-career professionals. The details are all below- and the attachment is a copy of the study consent form that is required to go with the request. While I pondered whether or not to forward to this (to keep our listserve mostly spam-free), the study and needs of the survey seemed worthwhile to me. So, if you are both interested, and qualified (he wants folks who earned an undergraduate degree 3-10 years ago, with 3-7 years of geoscience experience (which can include grad school)- please read on and chose, or no, to do the survey…

Thanks

Bernie

Subject: Help Needed - Early Career Geologist Survey

Hello. My name is Vic Ricchezza, and I'm currently disseminating a national survey as part of my dissertation research at the University of South Florida. The survey is designed to ask early career geologists about the math skills they use in and out of work environments, how confident they feel when doing so, and how satisfied they are with the undergraduate preparation they received (as related to quantitative and computer skills). Unfortunately, this group of geologists are the most difficult to track down (students are easy to find, and advanced geologists are generally registered with alumni groups and/or professional societies, but early career scientists are still establishing their identities and prove difficult to locate). It is for this reason that I am writing to ask for your assistance.

I'm seeking people who (1) earned a bachelor's degree in geology or a very-closely-related major (such as geophysics), (2) earned that bachelor's degree 3-10 years ago, rounded to the nearest year, and (3) have 3-7 years of related experience, which can include graduate studies, again rounded to the nearest year.

If you are willing and able to forward this information to any of your program alumni who might meet the criteria, in addition to my eternal gratitude, I'd be more than willing to share my data for the entire survey. I appreciate you taking time out of your busy day to read all of this. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you need any additional information.

Vic Ricchezza

Required IRB language (note also the attached consent information; this information is redundant as the online survey page requires informed consent to proceed):
You are being asked to participate in a research study (number 00035492) by investigators at the University of South Florida. The principal investigator for this study is Victor J. Ricchezza, who can be reached at ricchezza at mail.usf.edu<mailto:ricchezza at mail.usf.edu>. We are studying how geoscientists feel about their ability to use quantitative skills related to their job, and how this relates to their undergraduate education program. To be eligible to participate in this study, you must have obtained a bachelor’s degree in geology, earth science, or a related field, and have three to seven years of relevant experience. There are no benefits or risks to your participation. No compensation is offered for completing this survey, which should take you around 10 minutes. To complete the survey, please click the link in the email you were sent. Thank you for your time! Please contact the PI with any questions.

Cheers,
