Description: The Centre for Natural Hazards Research at SFU carried out collaborative landslide work with INGEMMET (Peruvian Geological Survey) in the Colca Valley and La Universidad Nacional de San Agustín in La Joya, northern Atacama Desert. In the Colca Valley Holocene debris avalanches from volcanoes deposited onto lake sediments have been reactivated by river undercutting. Movement was exacerbated by an 5.3 M earthquake on August 14, 2016, affecting infrastructure. In La Joya irrigation on the mesa is triggering a slow moving landslide in Tertiary sediments and evaporites. Infrastructure and houses in the valley are being affected. These landslides will be described.
