Subject: Job Posting from WWU Alum
Hello WWU Geo students and Alumni,
I am a western graduate (class of 2007) sending a notice of job listing from my company, NAEVA Geophysics, Inc. At the end of this email is text from the official job posting on our website (www.naevageophysics.com<https://nam11.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.naevageophysics.com%2F&data=04%7C01%7Cgeology%40wwu.edu%7C32d583d8626040b7dde508d9df7ea15e%7Cdc46140ce26f43efb0ae00f257f478ff%7C0%7C0%7C637786557568062933%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000&sdata=Wb9OOjPpqkyVR6YtEsOqCT64mPOjaWyGviAIes8W2rw%3D&reserved=0>), but I'll include some additional information about the company, job, and my experience as well. I enjoy being part of a team that takes pride in its quality product and know Western has a quality program filled with bright students and alumni.
I applied to NAEVA shortly after graduating with a B.S. and started in October 2007. I was hired as a data processor based out of the office location in Charlottesville, VA. NAEVA is a very small private business specializing in digital geophysical mapping. I can't speak to large business culture, but I have enjoyed the small business atmosphere throughout the years. Industry environmental geophysics is driven by production; it is a fast-paced environment unlike research/education and it also promotes innovation. Being such a small business, NAEVA largely employs solely geologists/geophysicists and solicits business contracts as a partner with (usually larger) other firms on large government sponsored remediation projects. These remediation projects involve clean-up of public and private land that was previously contaminated with chemicals and/or unexploded ordnance (UXO) during historic military training activities.
NAEVA owns a variety of geophysical equipment and designs and performs geophysical surveys to locate buried UXO. Since I started at NAEVA, new technology being developed has emerged as the future of the UXO industry and NAEVA has had a good long-term relationship with other industry leaders. In addition to UXO, NAEVA also performs subsurface surveys for other types of projects including mapping utility locations, burial features, archeological sites, and mineral exploration sites. There are two major career tracts in the company, data processing and field work, and NAEVA is currently hiring from the field geologist/geophysicist tract.
NAEVA values employee retention which may be coming back into fashion in the US as the pandemic has shifted life values for many in the last two years. As an example, the previous president (who hired me twice), bought the company after 21 years of service straight out of college, and grew its chapter of environmental geophysics until retirement 2020. Field geologists typically are trained from the ground up and start as a team member and move on to team leader and then project manager for those with interest. Technical/mechanical inclination is a highly valued skill as field staff need to troubleshoot equipment and perform preventative maintenance regularly on geophysical instruments and their integrated software such as EM sensors, magnetometers, GPR, seismic equipment, and several high precision positioning equipment packages. Communication, teamwork, and attention to quality are skills highly valued as well. Field work is physically demanding and can be very rewarding especially as an introduction to industry environmental geology. It is well suited to those with the flexibility of not necessarily being tied to a home base - those looking for the opportunity to travel extensively while growing a career.
I'll describe some example experiences a field geologist/geophysicist may have at NAEVA. Typically, a field crew is comprised of two people, a team member and leader, who work under direction of their project manager to plan mobilization to the project site. Crews may drive work trucks or fly to project sites with packed equipment depending on what is needed and site location. Smaller jobs may be shorter in length and use heavy handheld/backpack equipment whereas larger jobs may require operation of tow-vehicles (tractors/ATV/etc.) that can require maintenance and troubleshooting during production. Often weather conditions are more extreme, terrain can be difficult, and hours and project length can be long. Lodging is planned/provided for and typically there is per-diem in addition to salary for project duration. Field crews interact daily with clients in person while on site and with team members from NAEVA's data processing crew and project managers via email/phone. Teams transfer completed survey data to the office daily where it is processed into digital maps for delivery to clients. Field staff may have warehouse/office duties or assist in report writing and equipment configuration testing while not on project assignment. Much of NAEVA's project portfolio is ultimately billed to the DoD and quality of project planning and execution is of top concern. If you, or someone you know sounds like a good fit for this position, please pass this listing on or apply. I am more than happy to answer questions if you'd like to contact me directly as well. The listing states qualifications of a 4-year degree, but NAEVA may entertain applicants without a degree who have outstanding technical/mechanical troubleshooting abilities with good teamwork and communication skills especially if they have some prior knowledge of geophysical surveying.
Thank you and rock on,
Jennifer Rose (she/her)
