Dear students and alumni:

Please apply to take the ASBOG<https://www.asbog.org/> Fundamentals of Geology Exam (FG). Washington State and 31 other states require licensing to practice as a professional geologist. The first step toward licensure is passing the ASBOG FG. The next FG in Washington is scheduled for October 6, 2023<https://www.dol.wa.gov/professional-licenses/geologists/exams-geologists>. The application deadline for the exam its July 15, 2023 although, the exact due date is yet to be confirmed.

The ASBOG exams are now computer based and administered by a computer-testing company called Prometric. The testing sites can be found here<https://www.isoqualitytesting.com/locations.aspx> and currently the closest site to WWU is Mountlake Terrace, WA. I have had meetings with staff from Prometric and WWU's Testing Center and I am trying to arranging a testing site on campus (WWU Testing Center) so stay tuned.

You can take the exam as a student if you meet the educational requirements<https://www.dol.wa.gov/professional-licenses/geologists/geologist-licensing-board/policies-geologist-licensing-board> (visit my web site<http://kula.geol.wwu.edu/rjmitch/geolicense.html>). Preparing for the exam will be so much easier while you are still a student because the subject matter will be fresh, and we have study guides (REG Review<https://regreview.com/>) available in the department and the AEG Student Chapter organizes a study group. The exam is 140 multiple choice questions, and the content breakdown can be found here: http://kula.geol.wwu.edu/rjmitch/2015_ASBOG.png

Fees<https://www.dol.wa.gov/professional-licenses/geologists/fees-geologists#nationalassociationofstateboardsofgeologyasbogexamscandidats>: The WA DOL application fee is $135. The fee to ASBOG is about $275 ($200 to ASBOG and $75 for the computer-based testing fee, which is subject to change).

Your fees will be subsidized if you are an enrolled undergraduate or graduate student at Western. Due to the generosity of a donor, the Department has set up Geologist Licensing Exam Fund. Subject to review, we currently reimburse your state DOL application fee for the ASBOG FG exam, and also reimburse your ASBOG application fee if you pass the ASBOG FG exam.

That said, there are no excuses for not taking the exam as an enrolled student: 1) there are study materials in the department, 2) the testing location will be convenient, 3) your fees will be subsidized, and 4) passing the FG exam will improve your job marketability because Washington State requires that practicing geologists be licensed.

Visit my web site for general Geologist Licensing information and application procedures. http://kula.geol.wwu.edu/rjmitch/geolicense.html

Feel free to contact me if you have questions.
