Hi geologists,
This looks like a fantastic opportunity doing landslide-related research with the USGS in the SF Bay area.
" We would like to fill the positions beginning this summer or fall, so this might be a good opportunity for recent or upcoming MS-level degree candidates or those with some years of experience."
Great application USAJobs advice in the email below, plus you can check out Ricardo Esobar's slides from his GLT a few years ago on navigating federal careers: https://geology.wwu.edu/files/2023-09/NavigatingPublicLandsFederalCareer_ESCOBAR.pdf.
Cheers,
Allison

Subject: [GilbertClub] Upcoming USGS vacancy announcement in the San Francisco Bay area for landslide-related research
Dear colleagues,
I'd like to bring to your attention an upcoming employment opportunity with the USGS for a Masters-level (GS-9) geologist position at our Moffett Field, California (San Francisco Bay area) office. We are looking to fill one and maybe two positions in our landslide research group. We seek applicants with skills in GIS, GPS, remote sensing (satellite and aerial imagery, drone-based structure-from-motion), and landslide inventory mapping. We are also seeking experience with satellite or preferably ground-based radar (InSAR) data collection and analysis. These skillsets are expected to be applied to a number of landslide-hazard related projects in California and other western states, including mapping and disseminating landslide inventory data, analyzing spatial and topical patterns of landslide distributions, and participating in field work campaigns to assess active landslide movement. The following links provide examples of recent and ongoing projects carried out by our larger research group:
Landslide mapping and monitoring: Rainfall and Landslides in Northern California | U.S. Geological Survey (usgs.gov)<https://www.usgs.gov/programs/landslide-hazards/science/rainfall-and-landslides-northern-california>
Rockfall research: CSI: Rockfall Forensics | U.S. Geological Survey (usgs.gov)<https://www.usgs.gov/programs/landslide-hazards/science/csi-rockfall-forensics>
Landslide geomorphology research: GeoMapping for Integrated Science | U.S. Geological Survey (usgs.gov)<https://www.usgs.gov/centers/gmeg/science/geomapping-integrated-science>
The position(s) are one-year term positions but are renewable for up to four years pending performance and funding, with the hope that these positions would be turned into permanent positions afterwards for the right candidate and with continued funding. We would like to fill the positions beginning this summer or fall, so this might be a good opportunity for recent or upcoming MS-level degree candidates or those with some years of experience.
The job announcement will be posted on USA Jobs (https://www.usajobs.gov/) and should be easily found by searching for "USGS" and "California" in the Keywords and Location fields, respectively. We expect the announcement to open on Friday, June 14, 2024 and be open for 14 days. Note that there will be a cap on the number of applicants, so timely and early applications are encouraged since the announcement may close earlier if the cap is reached. Some additional notes for prospective applicants are provided here:
*
*IMPORTANT* Since this is a professional series position, there is a positive education requirement. Applicants who do not have the required coursework will be disqualified from further consideration. Applicants should submit ALL copies of their unofficial transcripts. This is especially important if they've attended multiple schools. Transcripts from final degree-granting schools do not not always list the transfer classes. The transcripts are needed to confirm that the applicant has completed the required coursework for the basic education requirement. ALL applicants regardless of whether they are current USGS, or whether they are current federal employees in the series MUST do this.
*
If applicants are qualifying based on education and they have completed their degree requirements, but their transcripts have not yet been updated, applicants may submit a letter from the school indicating that they have completed their degree requirements along with a copy of their most recent unofficial transcripts. Transcripts must contain up to date information.
*
Resumes should include at least a month and year, along with their relevant work experience underneath each period of employment. Resumes or CVs should contain enough details regarding their work experience to determine whether they have the specialized experience or not. Assumptions will not be made based on a position title listed on an applicant's resume. Please also see USAJOBS Help Center | What should I include in my federal resume?
*
Applicants MUST submit ALL required documentation prior to the close of the announcement. All documents must be legible. Applicants can e-mail the contact person in the vacancy announcement to confirm that their documents are all uploaded correctly. Sometimes the documents submitted are blurry and really hard to read.
*
Applicants may also access the HELP section of the USAjobs site where more detail regarding the federal hiring process is provided. https://www.usajobs.gov/Help/
Thank you for disseminating this message to prospective candidates.
Best regards,
Brian Collins
