Dear students and alumni:
Please apply to take the ASBOG<https://www.asbog.org/> Fundamentals of Geology (FG) Exam. Washington State and 31 other states require licensing to practice as a professional geologist. The first step toward licensure is passing the ASBOG FG Exam. The next FG Exam in Washington is scheduled for March 21, 2025<https://www.dol.wa.gov/professional-licenses/geologists/exams-geologists>. The application deadline for the exam is about January 15, 2025.
You can take the FG Exam as a student if you meet the educational requirements<https://www.dol.wa.gov/professional-licenses/geologists/get-your-license-geologists>. The exam is 140 multiple choice questions, and the content breakdown can be found here<https://kula.geol.wwu.edu/rjmitch/ASBOG_Exam_Categories.pdf>. Application procedures are attached.
Fees<https://www.dol.wa.gov/professional-licenses/geologists/fees-geologists#nationalassociationofstateboardsofgeologyasbogexamscandidats>: The WA DOL application fee is $135. The fee to ASBOG is about $275 ($200 to ASBOG and $75 for the computer-based testing fee, which is subject to change). Your fees will be subsidized if you apply as an enrolled undergraduate or graduate student at Western (see the attached flyer).
The ASBOG exams are now computer based and administered by a computer-testing sites<https://www.isoqualitytesting.com/locations.aspx> including WWU’s Testing Center.
Enrolled students, there are no excuses for not taking the ASBOG FG Exam if you meet the educational requirements:

  * your exam application fees will be subsidized,
  * your geology course-work comprehension is fresh,
  * there are REG Review<https://regreview.com/> exam study materials in the department,
  * the AEG Student Chapter organizes study sessions,
  * you can take the computer-based exam locally at the WWU Testing Center,
  * passing the ASBOG FG exam will improve your job marketability because Washington State requires that practicing geologists be licensed, and
  * passing the ASBOG FG exam is good for life and valid in all the states having licensure.
