Request for student assistance, summer, 2014, and 2014-15 academic year.
I am working on an NSF-funded grant to study the origin of terranes in the
San Juan Islands and Cascades. A summary of the project can be found here.

We have financial support for two students. I am looking for two WWU
students to participate in field and lab work for approximately 3-4 weeks
during the summer at a stipend of $2000 each. At least one of the students
will use the data as part of a senior thesis. The field work will take place
in the North Cascades in three areas: Yellow Aster Meadows area, Schreibers'
Meadows area, and possibly near Mt. Formidable, so mountain hiking
experience and enthusiasm for walking up and downhill, carrying rocks,
possible bad weather, and awesome geology (and scenery)is needed. The field
work will include mapping of rock types, sampling for U-Pb dating, and,
depending on student interest, structural geology and petrology. Mileage
and food costs for 3 weeks of camping-based field work are included. The
lab work will include preparing thin sections and some preparation of U-Pb
samples. We also will support travel to accompany me to the University of
Arizona Laserchron Center in Tucson so that you will gain direct experience
and training with the laboratory procedures and data analysis of U-Pb Laser
ICPMS dating. This trip will likely occur in late fall or over winter
break, 2014. Travel funds for one student to present a poster or talk at
the GSA or AGU meeting is also included. Field course experience is
preferred, but not required. For students who wish to do a senior thesis,
grades of B+ or better in structural geology and petrology are required; a
graduation date of winter, 2015 or later will allow completion of a thesis.
If you wish to apply for these positions, email me with a letter describing
your relevant experience, your goals for your geology degree and beyond, and
whether you are interested in pursuing a senior thesis project next year.
Please also include a list of upper-division geology courses (with grades)
you will have taken by the end of spring, 2014, what you plan to take next
year, and when you hope to graduate. Deadline is March 7, 2014. If you
have additional questions, contact me at liz.schermer at wwu.edu, or come by my
office or lab (ES438/ES108).
