Subject: STEM Internship Opportunity
Hello,
I'm writing to inform you of an internship opportunity for current juniors (and exceptional sophomores). I'm an alumni of WWU's physics department, and now a graduate student at the University of Rhode Island Graduate School of Oceanography (GSO), and the graduate student coordinator for our summer REU program. Could you please distribute this to students in BIO, GEO, PHYS, CHEM, and ESCI departments?
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship in Oceanography (SURFO) program is accepting applications (due March 1st ) for summer 2014. Accepted fellows will participate in a 10-week, independent research study at GSO. Fellows receive approximately a $5000 stipend for the 10 weeks, as well as housing, and travel reimbursement (up to ~$700). Research projects are in the fields of physical, biological, chemical, or geological oceanography, atmospheric chemistry, and ocean engineering. Last year's SURFOs research projects ranged from the medical properties of deep-sea bacteria to energy extraction from turbulent flow for use as a sustainable energy source. SURFOs are housed in rental houses a 5 minute drive (10 minute bike ride) from GSO, and just blocks from a private beach (to which interns have access).
More information, as well as application materials, can be found at: http://surfo.gso.uri.edu/~surfo/
Thank you,
-Kellen Rosburg
