Galaxies: what, when, where, and why do they die?

Dr. Ryan Quadri
Carnegie Fellow, Carnegie Observatories, Pasadena, CA

Galaxies are complex systems, and their properties are governed by physical processes that occur over a tremendous range in both physical size and timescale. Since few of these processes can be sufficiently modeled from first principles, we must use observations of galaxies at a variety of epochs as well as detailed modeling to shed light on why galaxies look the way they do. In this talk I will give an overview of our current understanding of how galaxies form and evolve, and will show examples of the types of observations that are currently in use. I will also discuss one of the most perplexing issues in the study of galaxy evolution, which is why some galaxies stop forming stars altogether even when the fuel for star formation is abundant.
