Any undergrads who want to do a cool MS project in petrology/geochronology working in Mexico?
Sounds like an awesome project, and Graham Andrews would be an amazing advisor.
Your home base would be CSU Bakersfield.

Hi all,

I have received NSF funding that will allow me to fully support an MS student to complete a thesis studying the Sierra Madre Occidental silicic large igneous province. The study will be primarily geochronology and petrology to examine the petrogenesis of lavas and ignimbrites in the central SMO.

I am looking to recruit a motivated and reliable student with an interest in igneous or volcanic petrology to start in the summer. Ideally the student would be able to speak Spanish (better than me!) but this is not essential. It is essential that they have a BA/BS in geology (minimum GPA 3.0; ideally 3.2+) and have completed fieldcamp before August.

CSU Bakersfield might not be the most glamorous destination for graduate school but I can offer full scholarship support for two years (minus tuition) including the intervening summer, an MS degree with concentrations in Petroleum Geology and Hydrogeology, and access to a good range of equipment. Bakersfield has a great climate (I'm serious - don't listen to the haters!) and is very affordable. Overseas candidates are welcome although they will inevitably be more challenging to get paperwork for.

This would be a great opportunity for a student interested in pursuing graduate studies but who maybe doesn't have the grades to be competitive for funding at an R1 school, or a student who is interested in volcanology / petrology but ultimately wants to work in the Petroleum or Hydrogeology industries.

I am particularly keen to recruit a student from a group under-represented in the STEM fields.

If you can think of potential candidates please have them contact me directly in the next two to three weeks. If they try to apply without talking to me first they will find enrollment suspended.

Thanks all

Graham
