Hi All,
Huxley Colleagues, can you forward to students that might be interested?
Anyone is keen on exciting field research experience this summer, please let me know your interest and availability, especially during low tides of May 18-20, June 3-5, June 16-17, July 2-4, July 30-31, and into August.
Our USGS-WWU team will be:
1. Measuring bedload transport across the lower Skagit and Stillaguamish Rivers and tidal flats using Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers,
Bedload Samplers, underwater cameras/video, and a couple of other sonar devices.
2. Studying the evolution of a new avulsion on the N Fork Skagit River.
3. Mapping and generating DEMs and metrics of roughness across several beaches using RTN-GPS, photography and Structure-From-Motion techniques.
4. Characterizing beach facies (grainsize) using a Cobble Camera and automated digital photographic analyses in Matlab.
5. Mapping stream channel bathymetry/facies with single-beam sonar and sidescan along the Nooksack, Skagit, Stillaguamish, Nisqually, and Skokomish Rivers.
6. Mapping seagrass and drowned treasure chests in Bellingham Bay, Skagit, and Port Susan Bay with sidecan and various sonar.
7. Deploying a network of current meters and water property sensors to capture this summer's anomalous high temperatures and the circulation that will affect algal blooms, fate of river plumes, and other strange phenomena.
8. For those interested in fish, we are mapping outmigration and nearshore residency of Skagit R salmon and forage fish with lampara nets.
Happy Summer
Eric
