Subject: Please Forward to Students: Social Awareness in Village Education Gala

Dear Students,

Western Students Against Violence is collaborating with the Institute for Village Studies as well as student groups on campus to put on the Social Awareness in Village Education gala. The second annual event will take place at the Bellingham YWCA Ballroom on Friday, June 5th, 2015 from 6:00pm-8:00pm.

The primary focus of this event is to provide sponsors for disadvantaged girls and women in India so they can pursue an education and have access to healthcare services. This evening intends to raise awareness on issues concerning privilege, race, education, and women's empowerment. Dr. Jain initiated the Social Awareness in Village Education program through the successful efforts of the Sarnath Village Development Project. In 2013, the schools were shut down, stripping nearly 400 children of their access to education. The purpose of this gala is to raise money to sponsor children so that they may continue with their academic aspirations. All proceeds from the gala will go towards international grassroots organizations.

In the wake of recent tragedies, 30% of the funds raised at this event will go to Sahayatri Nepal for disaster relief efforts. This is an organization run by a local woman for underserved female community members and their children. For more information, please visit http://www.nepalsahayatri.org.np/index.php.

The entrance fee for the gala will be $12 for students and $16 for non-students. Tickets will be available pre-sale online through the WWU Box Office and at the door at the start of the event. For a complete background on the Sarnath Village Development Project, please visit http://sarnathvillagedevelopmentproject.org/Default.aspx. Additionally, you can find more information about the Institute for Village Studies at http://villagestudies.org/. The Institute for Village Studies is a locally recognized 501(c)3 organization, therefore all donations will be tax deductible.

The gala will include a presentation, local performers, a silent auction, henna artists, and refreshments from India Grill. Any support you are willing to provide will make a difference. If you have any questions or concerns, please direct them to westernstudentsagainstviolence at gmail.com<mailto:westernstudentsagainstviolence at gmail.com>. For disability accommodations, please call (206) 459-0029. We look forward to seeing you there!

Sincerely,

Western Students Against Violence
