Hey All- Deadline for Geoscientist in the Park on MONDAY! This is a great opportunity to get some experience under your belt before you graduate.
Here is what Quinn Butler had to say about the program – Geology Graduate Spring 2015 GIP Summer 2014
Applying to GeoCorps positions is pretty straightforward. You first need to buy a student membership to create an account and apply to positions. The fee is definitely worth it especially if you get accepted, but also because you will gain access to lots of research material and other geology-related tidbits. The online process is informative and easy. The hardest part is narrowing down which positions to apply for because you can only choose three. I applied based on which positions sounded most appealing to my interests and also on the required qualifications.
I ended up working as a speleologist (cave scientist) for Coronado National Memorial in southern Arizona for the National Park Service. I had no prior experience working in caves and knew very little about them, but met the basic qualifications, had a strong cover letter, and great references from faculty at Western which likely made a strong enough first impression to get an interview. My duties were to create a cave management plan that involved updating GIS maps, searching for caves in unexplored regions of the park, installing anthropogenic and meteorological monitors in existing caves, restoring vandalized cave features, and improving cave visitor safety, among many other things. Because my boss was a biological technician and I worked with the resource management division, I also learned about and was involved in restoration, environmental and ecological studies, and public education and outreach programs. The position was absolutely worth all the time, energy, and little bit of money put into applying. I am still in touch with the friends I made as well as my boss. Be sure to follow up with the positions when you apply by shooting them an email or giving them a call!

[GSA]
Hello,
Monday, 29 February, noon (MST) is the deadline to complete an application for summer positions in the National Park Service (NPS) Geoscientists-in-the-Parks (GIP) program. To apply, visit the GIP online application page<http://GSOA.informz.net/z/cjUucD9taT01Mzg3NTgwJnA9MSZ1PTEwNjgwMjc5MjQmbGk9MzM2NTg5MjE/index.html>. To learn more about the program, visit the GIP home page<http://GSOA.informz.net/z/cjUucD9taT01Mzg3NTgwJnA9MSZ1PTEwNjgwMjc5MjQmbGk9MzM2NTg5MjI/index.html> and view the GIP flyer<http://GSOA.informz.net/z/cjUucD9taT01Mzg3NTgwJnA9MSZ1PTEwNjgwMjc5MjQmbGk9MzM2NTg5MjM/index.html>. Over 70 positions are available for summer 2016.
Application Requirements
For an application to be considered complete, it must include:
•answers to all of the “Contact Info and Program Application Questions”;
•at least one letter of recommendation;
•one cover letter for each position to which you are applying;
•a record of grades in all relevant courses (only if you have been a student and/or taken classes in the last 5 years).
Still Time to Apply
If you have not yet started an application, you can still apply, but be sure to complete all portions by the deadline. Recommendation letters are due on the 29 February deadline, but most positions will not begin reviewing applications until 7 March, so if your recommendation letter comes after the official 29 February deadline, but before 7 March, your odds of receiving full consideration are very good.
Positions
Each person can apply to three GIP positions. A few positions, such as those at Cuyahoga Valley National Park<http://GSOA.informz.net/z/cjUucD9taT01Mzg3NTgwJnA9MSZ1PTEwNjgwMjc5MjQmbGk9MzM2NTg5MjQ/index.html>, Hagerman Fossil Beds National Monument<http://GSOA.informz.net/z/cjUucD9taT01Mzg3NTgwJnA9MSZ1PTEwNjgwMjc5MjQmbGk9MzM2NTg5MjU/index.html>, John Day Fossil Beds National Monument<http://GSOA.informz.net/z/cjUucD9taT01Mzg3NTgwJnA9MSZ1PTEwNjgwMjc5MjQmbGk9MzM2NTg5MjY/index.html>, Buffalo National River<http://GSOA.informz.net/z/cjUucD9taT01Mzg3NTgwJnA9MSZ1PTEwNjgwMjc5MjQmbGk9MzM2NTg5Mjc/index.html>, George Washington Memorial Parkway<http://GSOA.informz.net/z/cjUucD9taT01Mzg3NTgwJnA9MSZ1PTEwNjgwMjc5MjQmbGk9MzM2NTg5Mjg/index.html>, and the NPS I&M Program, Northeast Coastal and Barrier Network<http://GSOA.informz.net/z/cjUucD9taT01Mzg3NTgwJnA9MSZ1PTEwNjgwMjc5MjQmbGk9MzM2NTg5Mjk/index.html>, have a relatively low number of applicants, so please consider applying to those locations.
Selection Process and Timeline
•7 March: The top few applicants for each position will be contacted by NPS staff via e-mail or phone and asked to schedule a phone interview;
•7 March - 25 March: Phone interviews take place;
•21 March - 25 March: Position offers are made, via e-mail or phone;
•30 March: Deadline for applicants make a decision on whether to accept an offer or not; prompt decisions are appreciated;
•30 March: Anticipated date by which all positions will be filled. When a position is filled, its status will be updated at the online list of GIP positions<http://GSOA.informz.net/z/cjUucD9taT01Mzg3NTgwJnA9MSZ1PTEwNjgwMjc5MjQmbGk9MzM2NTg5MzA/index.html>.
GIP and GeoCorps America
The Geological Society of America (GSA) GeoCorps America program<http://GSOA.informz.net/z/cjUucD9taT01Mzg3NTgwJnA9MSZ1PTEwNjgwMjc5MjQmbGk9MzM2NTg5MzE/index.html> is managed separately from the National Park Service (NPS) Geoscientists-in-the-Parks (GIP) program<http://GSOA.informz.net/z/cjUucD9taT01Mzg3NTgwJnA9MSZ1PTEwNjgwMjc5MjQmbGk9MzM2NTg5MzI/index.html>. GeoCorps America offers positions with the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the U.S. Forest Service, whereas GIP offers positions with the NPS. Please keep this in mind as you complete your GIP application, because it is a separate application from the GeoCorps program. For summer 2016 GeoCorps positions, the application deadline is 29 February for most BLM locations. The deadline will arrive in late March for most Forest Service locations. Check the GeoCorps website<http://GSOA.informz.net/z/cjUucD9taT01Mzg3NTgwJnA9MSZ1PTEwNjgwMjc5MjQmbGk9MzM2NTg5MzM/index.html> for details on positions and deadlines.
