Hi All,
Welcome Back! I hope you had a wonderful break and got to get out into nature! PLEASE OH PLEASE READ ALL THE WAY THROUGH :)
Several items to address so you too can be informed :)
1. Are you graduating Summer Qtr? Please complete your evaluations by March 11, 2016 (preferably way before that deadline) so you don't incur a $35 late fee. Pick-up an evaluation form in the office or ask for it by e-mail. You need to fill it out and return to me. You will also need to fill out a Degree Application as well http://www.wwu.edu/registrar/bach_information/degree_application.shtml
2. If you plan on field camp Spring or Summer please make sure that you don't miss any of the pre-meetings and if you can't be there let the faculty member in charge know. Also if you have not told me if you will be going to spring or summer field camp...DO SO NOW. I feel like I am missing some of you!
3. If you have a locker please label it clearly. If have a locker and you no longer need it please clear your stuff out so that other's may use it.
4. ALERT! ALERT! ALERT! Please don't make Bernie take your privileges away. The computer lab has already been left open a few times this quarter and it is only day 9. Please...if you are the LAST one out LOCK it up, even if you don't think you are LOCK UP!!! Also please shut down monitors to save energy. ALERT! ALERT! ALERT! The same goes for all lab rooms as well...LAST PERSON OUT, LOCK UP.
5. Kitchen clean-up - You all have been doing a pretty good job of cleaning up after yourselves so PLEASE keep it up. We are missing utensils, specifically spoons, please clean and return all utensils and dishes as soon as you are done using them. Also Coffee Mug Theft has been at an all-time high this year...several people are missing their favorite cups/mugs and would like them returned!!! I am one of those victims that had a mug that sprouted legs and disappeared...so far not to have ever shown back up. If it's in the kitchen and it's not yours...borrow it but return it. Thanks!
It's that time of the year to start filling out scholarship applications see below and scroll through...it is up to you to do the research. I have also attached the Mount Baker Rock and Gem Club application. Due date is February 26th, 2016. There are a couple of scholarships for field camp so keep on scrolling down to find those. NOTE: GRAD STUDENTS I WILL SEND YOU ANOTHER LIST ON A SEPARATE E-MAIL.
Mt. Baker Rock and Gem Club
The Mount Baker Rock and Gem Club (MBRGC) generally fund a $1,500 scholarship to a qualified student pursuing a degree in geology or an earth science education-related field. Please look for application announcements in December. The scholarship is always presented at the Club's Annual Rock and Gem Show at Bloedel-Donovan Park, 2214 Electric Ave., Bellingham, sometime in March. The deadline for submitting completed applications is generally in February.
Geology Department Advance for Research
The Department of Geology will generally draws on its donation fund held by the Western Foundation to grant small advances for research expenses to undergraduate and graduate students in the department. Funds are available for field and laboratory expenses, which may include costs of analyses performed at other institutions. The amount of the advances will vary and will not exceed $500. All applicants are expected to apply for funds outside of the department. The effort you make to gather outside money will be a factor in our decisions to offer these grants.
Interested applicants should submit the following:
1. A research proposal approximately 2 pages in length; or a proposal submitted for another grant to fund the same research, include a cover letter to the Chair outlining how you would use the Departmental Advance in your research.
2. A statement of other support, including awards received or pending, including copies of the proposals submitted;
3. A budget of total proposed field and laboratory expenses, and how much of the total is requested from the Geology Department;
4. A transcript for any classes not taken at WWU (for undergraduates only);
5. A statement of support from your faculty adviser.
Proposals should be submitted to the department chair's office not later than April 15, unless that falls on a weekend or holiday, in which case it will be the following school day. Past recipients of Departmental Research Advances for Field Work may apply again, but preference will be given to first-time applicants. Recipients will receive a notification letter informing them of the award and outlining the reporting requirements of the Western Foundation; when that letter is signed and returned, an advance will be dispensed.
The Myrl E. Beck, Jr. Scholarship
This award will be in the form of an advance for support of research leading to an Honors Thesis. The amount of the award will typically be $1000. The award will only be available to students in their final year of study. Research should involve paleomagnetism and/or tectonics, and ideally should require use of the equipment in the Pacific Northwest Paleomagnetism Laboratory housed in the Department of Geology.
How to apply: Submit the following to Chris Sutton in the Geology Office
1. A brief research proposal.
2. Budget of proposed expenses.
3. A current transcript for any non-WWU coursework.
4. Short statement of career goals.
5.
6. The Geology Department provides a small scholarship to help defray field camp costs. This scholarship is for to use for any field course, and you can receive it once in your lifetime. It is based on merit and need. Write a short paragraph explaining why (academically and personally) you deserve this scholarship. Deadlines will be announced at pre-trip meetings. (Field Camp)
