Hi Chris,

I tried to send this to Theresa to send out to the Western student email list, but she's out of the office.

See below.

Hi,

Just wanted to offer this up to Western students.

John Woodman of the American Institute of Professional Geologists (AIPG) is hosting a one day trip. He has offered to take students to Hurricane Ridge on the Olympic Peninsula on Saturday Oct. 29th (weather permitting).

John's description, per his email:

"A road trip to Hurricane Ridge in the Olympic Mountains features, granitic glacial erratics transported from Canada, pillow basalt outcrops and metamorphic deformation. A short hike from Hurricane Ridge affords views of folded basalt and sedimentary strata.

If we have an extra hour, we could fit-in a visit to Ediz Hook. The Hook is a sand spit, built by the process of long shore drift with the help of the prevailing westerly wind on the Straits of Juan De Fuca. Two dams on the Elwha River and building of breakwater structures to slow the erosion of the cliffs to the west, also slowed the supply of beach building material to the spit. In the 1970’s, attempts to save the eroding sand spit, which protects the port of Port Angeles, consisted of capping the eroding beach with rip-rap (large boulders). Recently, touted as the world’s largest dam removal project, both dams on the Elwha River were removed and the rivers supply of silt to the river delta and beach has resumed."

This is a fantastic opportunity for anyone interested in geology to get together. Content should fit everyone's knowledge base, not too technical.

DETAILS:

This is a self supporting field trip. Limited carpooling may work out as the guide and one other person have some room in their vehicles.

Space is limited, first come first serve.

If interested or you have any questions, contact me via email at browerk2 at wwu.edu<mailto:browerk2 at wwu.edu>. Deadline is October 15th.
