[Geoldept] FW: Seasonal Affective Disorder/Depression (SAD) Screening Event

Beat the Blues Event

The annual Seasonal Affective Disorder/Depression (SAD) screening event is held for Western students on January 9th from 11:00 AM - 2:00 PM in the Viking Union Multipurpose Room. Early winter is a time when SAD can affect many people. Students can come to this event to be screened for depression, and then have an immediate follow up consultation with a counselor about the screening. This event also provides students with resources about seasonal depression, and therapeutic crafts and activities during the event. There are free snacks, a mindfulness corner, and other activities for participants.

After filling out seasonal pattern and mood questionnaires, students are sent to one of three counselors for further screening. All of the counselors at the event are from the WWU Counseling Center, Prevention and Wellness Services, or clinical faculty from the Psychology Department. Students who seemed more than moderately depressed may have been offered a follow-up appointment.
