Subject: WMU hydrogeology field course
Dear Colleague,
I am writing to let you know that the Western Michigan University Hydrogeology Field Course registration is now open and is welcoming applications from students at your University. The 6-week intensive, capstone Hydrogeology Field Course offered by the Department of Geosciences at Western Michigan University is one of very few hydro-technical programs in the United States and is formatted to mirror the rigorous traditional 6-week geology field courses required at most major universities. The program, developed in 1987, is directed by Tom Howe<https://wmich.edu/geology/directory/howe> and Dr. Matt Reeves<https://wmich.edu/geology/directory/reeves>. This applied course has trained hundreds of students from around the nation and abroad. The HFC teaches the following skills: aquifer testing, environmental surface geophysics, groundwater sampling and monitoring, HAZWOPER training, remediation and well drilling and installation. The majority of the geophysical testing, field work and training for this course is conducted at the Asylum Lake research and training site<https://wmich.edu/asylumlake>, which was developed to provide advanced field work and hands-on experience.
Due to increasing demand, the Department of Geosciences will be offering the Hydrogeology Field Course twice during the summer of 2017:
* Session 1: May 15 to June 23; Session 2: July 10 to August 18
Registration for both sessions begins on January 9, 2017 and will remain open until April 15, 2017. The HFC usually fills up within a few weeks, however, so the earlier you complete your registration, the better chance you will have of securing a spot in the course. Enrollment is limited to qualified applicants with preference to those who apply first and/or apply for multiple weeks. Places will be filled in the order in which registration fees and completed applications are received.
* The WMU Hydrogeology Field Course is a series of six one-week modules taught six days per week (Monday through Saturday). Classes begin at 8 a.m. each day and will often run into the evening. The course will be conducted on and near the campus of Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
* The course will emphasize state-of-the-art techniques for sampling, monitoring and evaluating groundwater systems. Particular attention will be paid to contaminated systems, aquifer testing and selected geophysical techniques.
* Each week counts as one semester hour and can be taken for graduate or undergraduate credit. Lectures will be minimal and will primarily be given to support field exercises or demonstrations.
* Students gain hands-on field experience using modern field technologies. Demonstration of some modern field equipment will be provided by manufacturer's representatives. In order to provide one with a broad introduction to modern field technologies, numerous items have either been donated or loaned to the Hydrogeology Field Course by manufacturers.
Please consider sharing this opportunity with your students as they prepare for this important tradition in their education.

Thank you for your consideration,
Tom Howe
