Howdy GeoPeople,
First, happy Spring! It is nice to see a bit more light (if not sun), despite the pollen onslaught.

Second- this is a follow up to previous messages regarding the big messes made in some of the ES classrooms that I sent to you all several weeks ago. I want to say that I appreciated the many responses from you about your concerns and high regard for keeping our department’s space in good shape. It turns out that the group responsible has been discovered (a set of martial arts enthusiasts), and the issue and solutions will be dealt with in a firm but constructive manner. See below for further details.

Have an enjoyable quarter

Bernie

Thanks Casey,

I am heartened to hear that someone has responsibly stood forward but still mystified as to what these folks were thinking. I don’t think that there should be a monetary charge for this; I hope instead that the students understand that there is a larger and long-term cost to their fellow-students if faculty and staff become less supportive of our current practice of open access to buildings.

Most of you know the practice but it bears repeating here: the assigned use of any campus space is always consistent with the physical characteristics of the space itself. Having said that, I note that the group in question did not formally reserve this space; the VU had no knowing, much less the opportunity to vet the suitability of this group’s activities with the classroom in ES. We were only able to identify the group when the Geology Chair suggested pulling the login record on the classroom computer.

As per your request, I have attached the photos, I have also copied the list of faculty and staff who took the time to express their dismay. They will take some comfort in knowing that the problem club has been identified but will also want the opportunity to add their own comments and (hopefully not too creative) suggestions.

Hi all,

So, I reached out to our martial arts clubs and did just hear back from one of them that they were, in fact, the group responsible. I’ll be meeting with them to redirect them into an appropriate space. They were very apologetic.

Clearly, this was a very significant impact, so I’d like to learn more about that impact to be able to talk with Shalom and Francis/Ellen about any custodial charges that should be assessed to the group.

I wasn’t copied on the original message(s) that sounded like they might have had photos attached. If there is photo documentation or further description, can someone share that with me, as well as a sense of the labor applied to correct the disarray?

I appreciate everyone bringing this forward so we could track it down. We know from past experience that often room alterations are not always, or even often, the result of AS Clubs, but of course sometimes they will be, so I’m always happy to help do the detective work.

Casey
