Hi geologists,
Are you interested in oceanographic science? Are you curious what it's like to do research at sea? Here's a great opportunity to find out. STEMSEAS is a program in which undergraduates learn about oceanographic science on research ships that are transiting from one port to another. Cruises are 5-10 days long and while the ship travels from port to port you get to do many of the things that take place on research cruises-seafloor mapping, sediment sampling, water chemistry, etc. They pay to get you to and from the ship, and there's no cost to you while you're at sea. This program is only open to undergrads (grad students, see me if you want to learn about opportunities for you), and they take people at all stages of their collegiate experience.
Here's a video that describes the experience (made by a participant last year): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aovj1Yn2PV8&feature=youtu.be
Learn more about STEMSEAS at http://stemseas.org, or chat with me if you have questions.
Aloha,
Jackie
