Geology majors:

I am working with graduate student Nyle Weldon in the North Cascades this summer, mapping and doing structural geology analysis near the route of the Ptarmigan traverse (see here: https://www.outsideonline.com/2235281/ptarmigan-traverse). This is a great opportunity to learn about how the North Cascades mountains formed and gain some great experience with deformed and metamorphosed rocks. We have funds available for two field assistants, one for 7 weeks, and one for 3 weeks (although it's possible this could be divided differently). The field work will take place for approximately five weeks in late July-early September, with expected weather delays and postponements that will surely turn 5 weeks into 7. Trips will be 5-7 days long in the wilderness. There is also the possibility of doing lab work (like cutting rocks) on the bad weather days. One student needs to be available the whole time, and must have mountaineering experience including travel in rough terrain and glacier travel experience. Interest in metamorphic rocks and structural geology interest is a plus. The second student should be available near the end of the field season, but could join us earlier if interested in pursuing possible senior thesis or research project options in the area. The second student doesn't need to be a mountaineer but should be comfortable in steep mountainous terrain off-trail, a strong backpacker, and willing to walk all day with a heavy pack. The field work could turn into a senior thesis project in structural geology, metamorphic petrology, or geochronology for the right student(s).

Please reply to me at Liz.Schermer at wwu.edu if you are interested and if you have experience with alpine hiking and backpacking. Please send a resume and list your geology courses as well as where you have been climbing, backcountry backpacking, or hiking. Even if you are a beginning geology student, you are eligible to join the project if you have mountain travel experience, so please contact me.

I look forward to hearing from you!
