Hello everyone,
I had a student recently come and talk to Women in Geology about her project relating to inclusion in STEM fields. Below is her statement about her senior project and a link to a survey. Education and promotion of inclusion in STEM is vital, and I encourage you all to take some time to fill out the survey.
Hello,
My name is Tian Qing, and I am a senior studying biochemistry. I am reaching out to seek collaboration on my senior project, which will involve creating a workshop for students in STEM about inclusion, diversity and anti-oppression.
Last year, a workshop series was put together for faculty in the College of Science and Engineering to raise awareness about issues of race, oppression, and inclusion. I intend to develop curriculum for a similar experience for students, and facilitate a workshop in the spring (May 2018). This workshop is specifically for students in the CSE, because there are few opportunities for us to engage with issues of race, diversity, and inclusion in our science classes. One of my goals for this project is to provide a space for students critically examine how scientific disciplines and science education can contribute to oppression, and our role in reshaping the scientific community to be more diverse and inclusive. However, in order to make this workshop as valuable for students as possible, I want to hear more about what involved students would like to discuss or learn about.
