Subject: Port of Tacoma internship
Hi Jackie!
We’re hiring an intern in our environmental department over the summer. The job description is attached. Please forward/distribute as you see appropriate. The summary is fairly brief so I’ve provide a little more context about working at the Port in the paragraph below.
The Port of Tacoma is among the largest container ports in North America. Over the last century the Port has grown from a small resource port to an industrial manufacturing center and major international gateway. Legacy contamination from historical industrial practices has impacted hundreds of acres of Port owned property. The Port has remediated over 420 acres of property and returned it to productive use, many sites still require attention. The Port’s Environmental Department manages these projects through the stages of cleanup: investigation, planning, community engagement, implementation, and monitoring. By working with the Port’ Environmental Remediation team the intern will learn about remediation site management, including hydrogeologic and contaminate fate and transport principles that guide effective site cleanup. As the intern becomes familiar with the Port’s portfolio of cleanup site they will learn about cleanup technologies (e.g., containment, removal, and bioremediation) and governing regulatory drivers, the Washington State’s cleanup rule (MTCA) and EPA Superfund Law (CERCLA). The tasks assigned to the well database project will teach the intern best practices for collection and management of environmental data in ArcMap, and map production. In addition, the intern will learn about Port operations by coordinating with other departments, tenant and terminal operators for site access.
Hope all is well in your world!
Sarah
Ps. I was reading the subterranean mountains Nat Geo article and was very excited to see your quotation!!
