Hi all,

The email below (plus the attachment) describe a superb (paid) internship opportunity for people interested in oceanographic science and quantitative data analysis.  The internship is based in Seattle, and involves MATLAB programming and work with oceanographic sensor data (and potentially time at sea!).  One of our graduates had this internship last year and she has moved into a more permanent position with the company, which is good news for another similarly motivated person.

Note that they are hoping for someone who can stay for more than a few months.

Hi Jackie,

I'm hoping you can help share our opening for a Physical Oceanographer / Ocean Data internship with my company RPS. Natalie has been fantastic and she has recently transitioned into a more permanent position, leaving another opening for an intern!

I attached the pdf of the job announcement and I am hoping you can share it with the WWU listservs. We are looking for someone full time (30-40 hours a week, M-F) to help with data analysis and QAQC of a variety of oceanographic sensor data. The paid internship is a great way to learn/polish MATLAB skills in applied applications, as well as gain experience for potential grad studies or other industry employment. In the past, successful interns have transitioned into a full-time role with the company. Previous ocean data and/or programming experience not required, one just needs the aptitude to learn new skills and familiarity with any kind of time-series data. While the intern will be supervised by Maya Whitmont, they will work closely with me too.

Traditionally, the internship has been advertised within the UW listservs, but I am hoping to broaden our reach a little bit more, particularly with graduation in the near future. Ideally, we can get a candidate who can stay longer than three months. Feel free to shoot me any questions.
