Hello Geopeople,
As Sue wrote yesterday, sabbatical is over, and I am back to work for you all as department chair. As my first official action, I would like to declare today, June 16, 2020, as Sue DeBari Freedom (from being Chair) Day, and to join me in thanking Sue for her hard and successful work, under extraordinary circumstances, over the past six months as chair. Thanks, Sue, and enjoy some time off!

Geologists!

Congratulations on wrapping up Spring quarter 2020 in some of the most unusual circumstances one could never have imagined.

Faculty, thank you for stepping up into the gargantuan task of re-imagining your courses and creating online incarnations with two weeks notice.  Students, you were amazingly kind, generous, and patient as you navigated this new reality.  You probably don’t realize how much those “thank-you’s” in the chat box at the end of each zoom class meant to your instructors.  A big thank you to you - students - because your curiosity and passion for geology is what makes all of this worthwhile. And thank you to Kate, Hye-In, and Ben for everything you do, because we wouldn’t have been able to move even one step forward without your dedication.

On another note, today is my last day as interim chair in Geology.
Bernie will be back from his professional leave starting tomorrow, and he will once again be your fearless leader.
This has certainly been a wild ride as chair and I have learned a lot. I will be back in my role as regular faculty member starting tomorrow.

Next fall when we are all back we will continue with the Geology community-building work we started but that abruptly ended in March, and look forward to creatively organizing our “All hands” meeting.  We will also start the fall with a new Graduate Student Success committee, more details of which I’ll be shortly sharing with graduate students.
Next year we’ll also have two new faculty members on board, Dr. Emily Roland (MACS), starting in the fall and Dr. Kristina Walowski (igneous petrology), starting in spring (both cc’d here, so feel free to send them an email to say hi!). I can’t wait to welcome them both here.

I hope you have relaxing and productive summers and I look forward to seeing you all in person soon.
