Hello, College of Science & Engineering students,



In the last few weeks, you may have seen the horrific videos of violence against Asian Americans and seen the news coverage of the mass shooting in Atlanta that claimed the lives of women who were targeted and fetishized. This has caused many people in the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community to experience a heightened level of fear and anxiety.



Especially in the STEM community, the model minority myth - that AAPI members have achieved the American Dream - is pervasive. However, this has only further divided people of color and given a false sense that AAPI people are immune from racism.



As the Community Ambassadors and the STEM Inclusion & Outreach Specialist, we want to help our community in any way we can.



Attached to this email is a pdf with information and resources for AAPI students, faculty, and staff. Other members of the campus community may wish to support our AAPI colleagues by educating themselves or donating to relief funds for victims of anti-AAPI violence.



As Community Ambassadors we are open to suggestions on how we can help with supporting the AAPI community at Western, and we welcome your input; below are links containing our community hours, which are open to all and provide a place for listening and processing. Western is not immune to this type of racism and hate, and we believe better education of our students, faculty, and staff of the racism experienced in our community and region is necessary.
