There will be no on-campus course fall 2021, the course will be taught on campus winter and spring, 2022

COURSE DESCRIPTION
This is a course in structural geology in the field (for undergraduates), a refresher in structural field methods (for graduate students) and an introduction to the structural and tectonic evolution of Washington (for everyone). The class will be taught during a 3-week period PRIOR TO THE BEGINNING OF FALL QUARTER, scheduled August 30-Sept. 19, 2021 (with a break for Labor Day weekend). The course content and textbook material for 318 will be the same as the traditional lecture class, but lectures will be done in camp and learning will be "hands-on". The course will be taught by Prof. Schermer and will involve camping and fieldwork in Washington state. We will spend the first few days on campus and in the field near Bellingham, then leave town for the remainder of the course. A day or two at the end will be spent back at WWU finishing reports and having a final exam. We will visit and study spectacular outcrops that show all of the types of geological structures and will enjoy camping in the great fall weather. There will be a $350 transportation fee charged for this course, in addition to your regular fall quarter tuition. Students will have to bring their own camping equipment (or share) and food. The geology department will provide transportation in vans. Likely study localities include: Deception Pass State Park, North Cascades Park, Cascade River and Skagit River valleys, Leavenworth area, Okanagan area.

Prerequisites for 318 are Geology 212 and Physics 114 or 161. Geol 212 can be waived for geophysics majors.

please contact Prof. Liz Schermer 360-650-3658, liz.schermer at wwu.edu if you cannot attend the meeting.
