If you are considering applying for our GIS Certificate or GIS minor, applications for Fall 2021 are due on May 1st. Details of the application process can be viewed here: https://huxley.wwu.edu/sal/application. You must have taken or be currently enrolled in ENVS 320 or GEOL 213 to apply.
Admission to the GIS Certificate will get you priority registration for ENVS 418 GIS II: Cartography and Geovisualization in the fall, ENVS 420 GIS III: Analysis and Modeling in the winter, and ENVS 421 GIS IV: Advanced GIS Applications in the spring.
Admission to the GIS minor will get you priority registration for ENVS 418 GIS II: Cartography and Geovisualization in the fall and ENVS 419 GIS Applications in the winter.
In addition to priority registration, admission to these programs means that you will have a GIS faculty advisor to help you navigate planning your class schedule and applying for internships and jobs, so please don't delay applying if you've decided you want to pursue a GIS degree!
What is the difference between the minor and certificate? The GIS Certificate is more rigorous and covers more advanced concepts and skills. Compared to the minor, the certificate requires a more specific list of advanced coursework, has a higher minimum grade requirement (B- on all courses for the certificate), and does an even better job preparing you to excel on the GIS job market. However, either is going to be a valuable addition to your skills and resume! If you apply for the certificate, you might as well apply for the minor too, as the coursework can double count for both. If you are seriously considering a career involving GIS, you should apply for our GIS Certificate program.
Our GIS Certificate and Minor are open to all majors from the Bellingham campus and the Huxley College on the Peninsulas campuses. The application process may be competitive when we have more applicants than seats in our classes, but I don't think that will be an issue this year because are offering more GIS class seats than usual.
If you love maps and enjoy spatial puzzle solving, I hope you will join our GIS program! Feel free to contact me with any questions (aquila.flower at wwu.edu<mailto:aquila.flower at wwu.edu>).
