Keck Adapts to the COVID-19 Pandemic
Just as all of us have engaged in extensive revisioning of our teaching during the past year of the pandemic, so too has Keck. We are so grateful for, and proud of, this year's project directors for their creativity and dedication in leading research experiences for undergraduates in such a challenging environment. All of the projects planned for 2021-22 are specially designed to maximize safety, learning, and flexibility during the COVID-19 pandemic. Each has outlined plans for how to adapt research activities to align with health and safety recommendations from federal, state, and academic institutions. Please join us in offering this year's directors our gratitude and support.

Keck Renewal Submitted to NSF-REU Program
Keck co-Directors submitted a renewal request to the National Science Foundation-REU program in August 2020. Informed by input from Keck Representatives, faculty, recent participants and alumni, the proposal highlighted the following goals for the next four-year program period (2022-2026): (1) further broaden participation in earth sciences, (2) deepen student knowledge of the Earth, professional skills, and science identity formation, (3) foster more inclusive and equitable recruiting, mentoring, and research experiences, (4) cultivate a deeper understanding of science identity formation in the geoscience community, and (5) further develop and validate the efficacy of a new REU assessment instrument. The proposed activities will both build on the Keck model for undergraduate research and also offer enhancements such as a team of "Alumni Advocates" and a "Faculty Diversity, Inclusion and Equity Advisory Group" to ensure that the practices, resources, and programs are inclusive and equitable for all students. If funded, the program will support 112 students over the next four years (16 students in the Gateway Program, and 12 students in the Advanced Program each year). We should hear from the NSF soon.

Impacts of Keck Programs
While preparing the proposal to the NSF this past summer, we had the opportunity to review three years of feedback on Keck programs from recent participants, program alumni, directors, and Keck Representatives. This process was central to identifying areas of improvement as we prepared the new proposal. Reading about and reflecting upon the transformative impacts that Keck programs have had on our alumni was a powerful experience. Below we share a few representative comments with you. In particular, Keck's professional development program was significant for our students as it fostered a sense of belonging and identity as a scientist:
*
* "The research experience lit a fire within me. As a student from an underrepresented minority group in the science community, this opportunity has encouraged me to obtain a doctoral degree and share my passion with other students who have a similar background as
* me."
*
*
* "Also I think that my identity is an important part of me being a scientist because not many people like me are represented in the geosciences."
*
*
* "I gained a passion for the natural sciences because of the Keck Project. I know now more than ever I want to continue doing science. It's what I love to do now."
*
*
* "I feel more like a scientist, and part of the scientific community after this experience than I have my entire life. I truly never really thought of myself as a scientist, just someone who's interested in it. However, this entire experience has really helped
* me build my confidence in my ability to perform scientific research, present research, and increased my sense of belonging to the community."
*
*
* "I gained so many technical skills, as well as life skills because of my participation in a Keck Project. I know I'm fully capable of being a scientist."
*
*
* "We were very diverse and I feel like that brought a lot of meaning to our group."
Call for 2022-23 Projects
We invite faculty to lead Gateway and Advanced projects<https://nam03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fkeckgeology.org%2Fresearch-opportunities%2Fprog-overview%2F&data=04%7C01%7Cparkh23%40wwu.edu%7C0f0f57c6cee548dea9fa08d8b8df635e%7Cdc46140ce26f43efb0ae00f257f478ff%7C0%7C0%7C637462616869074387%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=k1gCKY1LZuY094CyeSStEncOtVUtZhuh1K1Kz6HdGRY%3D&reserved=0> next summer and beyond. Contingent on the outcome of our NSF-REU proposal, Keck proposals for 2022-23 projects will be reviewed by Keck Representatives at the October 2021 GSA meeting.
