Hi all!
We are offering a hybrid course next quarter called Geological Field Methods, Geology 397G, taught by Professor Liz Schermer. Please see the details about the course below (note: this course is no longer override restricted so you can enroll directly now, CRN 24089).
About the course
Geology 397G will provide a field-intensive experience for students who were not able to have field labs during remote instruction in Geology 318. This applies to students who are enrolled in 318 next quarter (the prereq of 318 can be taken concurrently). Finally, this course will count as a spring field camp substitution if that applies to you.
Here is a description of the course:
This course is designed to teach you geological field methods including brunton compass use, structural and lithologic description, accurate field data collection and note-taking, and an introduction to geologic mapping. You will use your field data to interpret the geological history of our field sites. Tentative field sites include Chuckanut Mountains, Deception Pass State Park, and the North Cascades. The trips will involve short, possibly hilly, hikes (less than 2 miles) and you will need to be prepared to work outside for up to eight hours even in windy or rainy conditions. Transportation will be provided in WWU vans and personal vehicles to maintain social distancing.
Schedule (Hybrid):
* F 3-4 (remote-sync)
* Saturdays (in-person)
This course will consist of a few remote-synchronous Zoom sessions and five mandatory in-person field trips taking place on Saturdays, mostly during the second half of spring quarter. To receive credit for the course, you must be able to attend the in-person field trips on Saturdays. All WWU COVID protocols will be followed on the field trips, and you will need to follow the WWU procedures for COVID-19 testing and symptom attestation in order to attend the field sessions.
Please see the attached PDF for instructions on how to enroll in Western's badge tracking system for face-to-face learning. (Please let me know if you cannot access the PDF.)
If you have questions about the content of the course, please email Prof. Schermer at schermer at wwu.edu<mailto:schermer at wwu.edu>. There will be a zoom meeting scheduled near the end of winter quarter to give participants more information.
Thank you!
