Greetings.
I attended WWU in the 80's, graduating with a geology degree. I have been working in the environmental business since 1989. I plan to semi-retire in about 5 years (you never retire from being a geologist). A coworker has taken a job elsewhere so there may be an opening where I work. Since I am nearing retirement I think there's an opportunity for a recent graduate to work under my license towards professional registration. Now the work isn't glamorous as mineral exploration-I've nicknamed it industrial geology, but the candidate would learn all basic field techniques and remediation systems. Basically I assess, characterize and remediate petroleum hydrocarbon impacted properties. I've done well over 1800 projects. The graduate would use their geology skills by logging soil cores and writing a report. The interesting part is identifying the glacial sediment present. If groundwater is involved then there's groundwater testing, well installation, and measuring direction of flow, gradient and plume boundaries. Admittedly the work isn't glamorous but it pays well, is steady, and helps protect our environment. I've certainly done my share over 33 years. The successful candidate would express a desire to stay with the company when I slow down. The student would also be exposed to Federal work on military bases through my commercial contractor.
The ideal candidate studied glacial geology and has taken a class in organic chemistry and doesn't mind working in an urban environmental most the time. Report writing skills are important but basically it's use the appropriate template. No phone calls please. Any interested student can email me their resume with a cover letter and I will present those to corporate.
