Dear WWU Geology students, staff, faculty, alumni, and supporters,
I hope this message finds you well! I am writing in advance of the annual Give Day event (May 27) that the WWU Foundation organizes, to help raise support for the department and our students. This year, we are highlighting a few areas that represent opportunities to make a significant difference in the quality and scope of our programs, and to provide some much appreciated support for our students. On behalf of our current students, staff, and faculty, I want to first thank you all collectively for your outstanding record of support and advocacy for the department over the years. Your work and past gifts to support our programs and scholarships are highly appreciated, and this support is well-noticed by the WWU administration and community. The support we have been given enables our students to work on problems and projects that are important to our local region, such as impacts of climate variations on stream-flow and salmon habitat, science education, active faults and landslide hazards, tectonics and volcanology, or projects further afield in Hawaii, Argentina, the deep oceans, Australia, or the surface of Mars.
I will write again with an update as we get closer to this give day event. To save the place, here is the link to the WWU Geology portion of the WWU Give Day page- it is not active yet, but will become so, and will receive some updates in the next few days: WWU Give Day 2021 | Geology<https://wwugiveday.wwu.edu/giving-day/35532/department/35571>
The specific opportunities I mentioned are described in more detail on our Give Day page. Here is a quick summary:
To honor the memory and accomplishments of Lesley Lingley (’74) the Lesley Lathrop Lingley Memorial fund, to support and promote gender equity and research experiences by undergraduate students, has been established by generous initial gifts by Jim Diehl and Sue Beske-Diehl.
Thanks to a wonderful initial gift by Ralph Keuler ’78, a new fund to support the research projects of our Graduate Students has been established, with a 1:1 match up to and including $100,000 being pledged.
Finally, we are asking your help to grow our Geology Dept General Fund, which supports a range of department activities, including our fun and popular receptions at AGU and GSA conferences, as well as student scholarships, and unexpected needs. Lee Whitford (’01) has pledged a match for the first $2000 in total donations to this fund.
Thanks again for your past, present, and future support
Regards,
Bernie Housen
