Hi undergrads and recent graduates,
We have a short-term field assistant opportunity in the Fluvial Geomorphology Group for the first week of August. The position is a paid, 40 hour/week position for the duration of the field work.
You would be working with MS student Brian Pinke (cc'd) on an NSF-funded project aimed at understanding the variability in sediment size, strength, and density of volcanic mass wasting deposits between sites in the Pacific Northwest, with implications for downstream river hazards. Specifically, you would assist with field prep and field work at Mt. Adams from July 30 - August 7, planning to depart Bellingham on July 31st and return on ~August 6th.
Duties: We will identify volcanic debris flow deposits on the south flank of Mt. Adams, measure clast size using a tape measure, measure rock strength using a Schmidt Hammer, and identify clast lithology. This data collection will require long days in the field with little shade; backpacking on un-maintained, uneven, and unstable ground and trails; bushwhacking in the backcountry; carrying heavy packs (with rocks); sleeping in a small tent, defecating in the woods; maintaining a positive attitude and sense of humor in the face of uncertainty and moderate discomfort. Flexibility is a must.
If you are interested, please send an email ASAP to both Brian (pinkeb at wwu.edu<mailto:pinkeb at wwu.edu>) and Allison (pfeiffa at wwu.edu<mailto:pfeiffa at wwu.edu>) explaining your interest in and qualifications for this work, along with the name(s) of 1-2 people who could speak to their abilities (e.g. field camp instructors).
Thanks,
Allison
