Dear Geology Students,
We invite you to apply to join the first Lab Camp cohort this summer! Lab Camp is a new capstone option for our BS majors: it is a non-camping, accessible alternative to Field Camp focusing on modern methods in geology, especially digital mapping informed by remote sensing, targeted field campaigns, and laboratory sample analysis. This summer's program will be focused on tectonics, geomorphology, and marine sedimentary processes.
Please apply by filling out this form: https://forms.gle/7GvHAM5mhQAsuf738
Applications are due on April 7, and applicants will be notified in late April (with plenty of time prior to the start of Summer registration).
Please see below for more information about Lab Camp in Summer 2023.
Thanks,
Melissa, on behalf of the Lab Camp Team
What is Lab Camp? Lab Camp will be offered in the summer as a six-week, 12-credit program, comparable to WWU Geology’s existing summer Field Camp (Geol 409 & 410). There will be three 4-credit, 2-week ‘modules’ that will make up Lab Camp, offered back-to-back as an immersive educational experience. This summer's program will be focused on tectonics, geomorphology, and marine sedimentary processes.
Who will participate? 10 students, 3 instructors (Profs. Camilo Ponton, Allison Pfeiffer and Sean Mulcahy), and at least 1 TA
When is it? Summer 2023, June 21 - July 28
How much does it cost? Expenses for students will be equivalent to (or possibly less than) expenses for Field Camp
Where will it be? Lab Camp will be held at WWU’s Shannon Point Marine Center<https://spmc.wwu.edu/> (SPMC) in Anacortes, WA. It will be a residential program, and students will stay in accommodations on-site during the week (sharing double rooms). Students have the option to stay on site or go home over the weekends. There will be day trips via van and boat around the Skagit River system – from bedrock headwaters in the North Cascades to marine deposits beyond the Skagit Delta. There will also be occasional trips to WWU lab facilities for analysis.
How are students selected? Students will be selected for Lab Camp based on physical and/or other learning needs, academic interest, and travel-related issues (the need to stay near Bellingham). Applications will be available in early March and due on April 7.
Why is the department offering Lab Camp? A primary goal of this new course is to provide WWU Geology BS majors with an accessible, capstone research-like experience. Development of the Lab Camp program is supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation, led by Prof. Robyn Dahl.
Who do I contact with questions? Contact this year's instructors: Allison (pfeiffa at wwu.edu), Sean (mulcahs at wwu.edu) or Camilo (pontonc at wwu.edu)
