Hello GeoPeople,
Happy DeadWeek, and here is an interesting event we'll be hosting. A student artist, Noah Gray, will be installing work of art on and around the large round table outside the Geology Dept office. The artwork is inspired by the excellent examples of art and architecture that our ES Building is famous for. The exhibit will be set up tomorrow, March 8, and the artist will be there to answer questions, or discuss your view of the installed pieces. Please also, because some of the elements are small, please respect the installation while it is here. Here is a statement the artist wanted to share with you, along with the times they will be there to chat about the work.
"I am an artist currently working with metals and fibers, and I will be installing a site-specific interactive sculpture on the second floor of the environmental studies building on Wednesday March 8th from 3:30 to 4:30, where I will be available to answer any questions and discuss the piece! I have always loved the environmental studies building's bold concrete forms interspersed with windows in unexpected shapes and directions. This goes along with my general interest in viewing, and how perspectives differ as you move throughout a space. This sculpture will consist of a small, welded steel frame, in an abstract form of a building, with each of the walls and windows inside of it covered in flat planes of fiber, woven, sewn, or crocheted. These walls and windows will be able to be seen through, with different densities, abstracting the perspective of viewing as if looking through foliage. There will be one main structure, which can be picked up and moved around the space, and rotated to be viewed from any angle, and a more two-dimensional piece hanging in front of the window that looks out towards the engineering building. Thank you for allowing me to install my art in your building!
Noah Gray"
