You don't often get email from travis.west at dnr.wa.gov. Learn why this is important<https://aka.ms/LearnAboutSenderIdentification>
Hello,
The Washington Geological Survey (WGS) is seeking several geologists/geophysicists to join a team working on our School Seismic Safety Project<https://www.dnr.wa.gov/school-seismic-safety>. This project is helping to assess seismic vulnerability at schools across the State of Washington by collecting valuable geologic/geophysical information for schools, engineers, and researchers responsible for evaluating the earthquake resiliency at school structures. These positions start at the beginning of July, are either 3 or 5 months in duration, and are a great opportunity to gain both applied and research experience. Please see the attachments for position details and requirements.
Position summaries and salary— WGS is seeking to hire 5 people for this summer’s school seismic field work:
* Two Natural Resource Scientist 2 positions: These two positions will be for five months July-November and will be field team leads. A monthly salary range for this position is $4,324- $5,813 depending on experience.
* Three Natural Resource Scientist 1 positions: These three field assistants will be three-month positions from July-September. A monthly salary range for this position is $3,558.00 - $4,777.00 depending on experience.
* There will be a 4% salary increase for all state employees effective July 1, 2023 (this is not reflected in the salary ranges listed above)
* Per diem (food) and lodging reimbursement will be compensated while traveling when allowable per agency policy. Agency vehicles will be provided for field work.
Location— Positions are based in Olympia, WA; Field work will be conducted at school campuses across the state and will require frequent overnight travel.
Working conditions and schedule— Work setting is field (outdoor – usually ~85%) and office (indoor – usually ~15%). This position requires repeated swinging of a 16 lb. sledgehammer onto a metal plate that is resting on the ground on a daily basis, and the position requires the ability to lift equipment as heavy as 50 lbs. Field terrain is usually flat grassy ball fields but occasionally could include undulatory and uneven ground requiring moderate hiking carrying or moving equipment.
Extensive in-state, with occasional out-of-state travel is required. Driving can be a big component of the job, with 50+ miles daily driving during fieldwork and the potential for occasional overnight stays. These positions usually work four ten-hour days per week.
To Apply—
* Applications are due no later than 11:59 pm on June 9, 2023.
* Email required material to: Travis West, Project Manager - School Seismic Safety Project, Geologic Hazards Program, Washington Geological Survey; 360-764-0347; travis.west at dnr.wa.gov<mailto:travis.west at dnr.wa.gov>
* Ensure you meet the required qualifications (see attachments)
* Application: Provide a resume (including GPA), cover letter, list of completed geology classes and grades, and the names and contact information for at least three references. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
* Please indicate the position(s) for which you would like to be considered.
Telephone interviews will be conducted in late June; work starts in early July.
Please feel free to distribute this email and these announcements at your discretion.
