Dear Geology students and advisors,
I'm writing to introduce a new undergraduate course in Environmental Geochemistry that I will be offering in Winter 2024.
GEOL 397J - CRN 14145 - Environmental Geochemistry - MW 12:00-13:50
The goal of this course is to understand geochemical processes occurring at Earth's surface which are of particular importance to environmental quality and therefore to humans. Some examples include:
* Carbon capture strategies (mineral-water interactions)
* Disposal of mining waste products (acid-base reactions)
* Biomagnetism (kinetics and activation energy)
* Contaminants in drinking water (solubility products and saturation)
The course is designed for students interested in pursuing careers with environmental agencies, consulting companies and/or graduate studies in the geosciences. It introduces students to the fundamentals of low temperature geochemistry, starting from the atomic-level and building up to the global scale.
Prerequisites: GEOL 306 (or GEOL 311) and CHEM 162
Please see the enclosed flyer, and don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.
Thank you,
Camilo
