[Geoldept] New course: GEOL 397/597-E

Hi Geologists,

This is a (perhaps belated) note to make sure that folks know about a new course that will be offered in the Winter that was recently added to Browse/Classfinder. The course is called Justice and Equity in the Geosciences.

It has three main components:
1) understanding the history of inequity and racism in the field of geosciences;
2) spending time mentoring students in K-12 classrooms, being a geoscience role model; and
3) working with your classmates on a project that addresses in some way justice and equity in our academic community. This could take many forms, so bring your ideas and use the course to see them to fruition!

Draft syllabi attached.



The class will be held Mondays 9-10 am and Wednesdays 9-noon. In the second half of the quarter, the Wednesday class time block will be used for you to disperse via Geology vans to a number of schools in the area for the outreach/mentoring.



The course builds on the Department URGE Pod<https://geology.wwu.edu/wwu-urge-pod>’s efforts. Stay tuned for other ways to get involved. Sue, Sean, and I are just wrapping up the course design process and we’re excited to see this course come to fruition. Please consider being a part of it!
