Hello All,
The City of Bellingham is accepting name suggestions for a proposed beach/park in Bellingham Bay. We propose Maury Beach Park in honor of the late Maury Schwartz. Please join us in honoring Maury's memory and dedication to coastal sciences by submitting this name on the City's website survey.
The link from the City's website can be found at:

Below is a little bit about Maury Schwartz:
Dr. Maurice (Maury) Schwartz, eminent coastal geologist and Emeritus Faculty at Western Washington University made significant contributions to the body of work that informs our understanding of shoreline processes in the inland waters of Washington State both through his own research and his teachings at Western Washington University. Schwartz came to WWU in the early 1960s after a stint in the Navy during WWII, owning and running a store for ten years followed by college at Columbia University where he received his B.S., M.S., and PhD in geology.
The bulk of his research and study was focused on shoreline processes. He greatly influenced and taught many of the shoreline practitioners that work in the field today in western Washington, including the beach designer for (what is currently referred to as) Cornwall Beach Park, Jim Johannessen of Coastal Geologic Services.
Maury was forever a great teacher and his enthusiasm for his science and comfort with policy implementation based on sound science has been passed on to many of us who work along the coasts of Washington State and around the world. Maury passed in December of 2013, just a few short weeks ago.
Because of Maury's dedication to shorelines and our community, we should honor this late South Hill resident by naming this beach after him.
