Students, faculty and staff of color in WWU Geology,
To mirror the words of WWU President Shepard, in light of the recent incident of hate speech on our campus, we need to "come together to demonstrate our outrage, to listen to each other, and to support each other". Within the earth sciences, people of color and our interests are hugely underrepresented and our department is no exception. Incidences of white supremacy in academic spaces such as have recently occurred on campus only serve to highlight this.
I will be holding an informal meeting for geology students of color who wish to discuss recent events on campus and our experience as scientists of color. This will be tentatively scheduled in ES223 from 1-3 pm today (11/24), but will be cancelled if a larger student protest is scheduled during this time. In addition, I encourage any students of color who would like a safe space to talk about these and other events to email me at heywool at students.wwu.edu<mailto:heywool at students.wwu.edu>.
