Hi students,
As most of you hopefully know, we are in the process of interviewing job candidates for a split position between Geology and SMATE. For each candidate there are three opportunities for students to help us determine who will be the best fit for our program. First, we have an hour (or sometimes more) scheduled for students to meet directly with the candidates. This is a great chance to meet them, and find out what they might be like as an advisor or professor. I can also tell you that meeting students has a huge impact on the candidates-it is very helpful to them to see what our students are like, learn what is important to the student body, and see how committed our students are to this department. The second opportunity is to hear the candidates present their research. For this job some candidates will be presenting geology research while others will be presenting on science education research. Finally, each candidate has been asked to give a mock 211 lecture on the Structure of the Earth. Students are invited to be part of that audience (as faux students), ask questions, and provide feedback on their teaching style.
Here are the dates/times for these meetings for the next three candidates:
Emily Ward:
Meeting with students: Thursday, 2/25, 9:00 a.m., Bressler room
Research talk: Thursday, 2/25, 4:00 p.m., CF 120
Demonstration class: Friday, 2/26, 9:00 a.m., ES 213
Robyn Dahl:

Erin Pettit:

Note that during the next two weeks we will not have presentations during the normal Tuesday afternoon or Friday brownbag slots. We will have one more guest speaker this quarter during the brownbag slot on Friday, 3/11 (Harold Tobin of the University of Wisconsin will be talking about the IODP Nantroseize drilling project in Japan).
Your participation in this hiring process is very appreciated, so thanks in advance!
Aloha,
Jackie
