Dear Students,

The Departments of Physics/Astronomy and Geology seek student participation in the process of hiring new faculty members. In particular, we seek students to serve on student search committees for two current faculty searches: Planetary Science (for which we seek geology, geophysics and physics majors, as well as geology grad students) and Experimental Condensed Matter (for which we seek physics majors). Both departments strongly value broad participation and input in the hiring process, in order to build departmental cultures that support the learning and achievement of all students.

The student search committees will be conducting their work during Winter quarter 2019. Service on a committee will be compensated (i.e., paid work) and will involve approximately 15-20 total hours between January and March 2019. Student search committee members will be expected to:

  * Attend the candidates' research talks (days TBD, 4:00-5:00pm)
  * Attend lunches with the visiting candidates (days TBD, 12:00-1:00pm)
  * Attend the candidates' teaching demonstrations (days/times TBD), or watch the video recordings afterwards
  * Summarize the feedback from their peers and present that to the faculty search committee before the final selections are made.

If you are interested in serving on this committee, please apply via the following link to a Google Form by Friday, December 7: https://goo.gl/forms/ZjFVgaYY1xeNTJdz2

Please consider participating in this important process. If you would like more information about the opportunity, please contact Prof. Melissa Rice (melissa.rice at wwu.edu).

Sincerely,
Melissa Rice
on behalf of the faculty search committees
