Can/Am Media Systems (JOUR 397M)

Explore media flows-including broadcasting, hyperlocal/metropolitan news, popular culture, and public diplomacy- and their impacts on this critical global relationship. Produce media campaigns and stories. Prerequisites: JOUR 190 OR C/AM 200 OR ENG 101.

Publications- Concept to Design (JOUR 365)

This Course is designed for those who are interested in exploring magazines and who may be considering a career as a magazine writer, editor, or designer in both print and online environments. The course will focus on how magazines are conceived, organized, edited, and designed. Based on this background, students will build/design a prospectus for a magazine of their own content and design. The class will address the growth of online publishing. Online for summer quarter 2021.

Dear All,

The Linguistics Department would like you to know about our summer course offerings<https://chss.wwu.edu/linguistics/summer-2021-linguistics-courses>. We have two upper-division electives with NO PREREQUISITES, and two courses which fulfill GURs. Please share with your students! Flyer attached.

Linguistic Analysis (LING 310)

No prerequisites required

This is a focused introduction to linguistic analysis in phonetics, phonology, syntax, and semantics. The course will also offer students the opportunity to learn experimental techniques using programs such as: PRAAT, Synthworks, and PsychoPy. This course prepares students for more in-depth courses in theory and analysis and is a prerequisite for most courses within the Linguistics major (and minor).

The Structure of English (LING 402)

No prerequisites required
Rather than correcting each other and learning 'proper grammar,' we will explore how this fascinating, complex and ever changing language works. We will also investigate language attitudes of English speakers and how these attitudes shape our perceptions and influence social policy and institutions.

Intro to Linguistics (LING 201)

Social Sciences GUR

No prerequisites required

This course offers an introduction to the scientific study of language and the various subfields of linguistics, including how language is acquired, how it varies across time and space, and how it is used in different social contexts.

Sociolinguistics (LING 204)

Social Sciences GUR

No prerequisites required

Slang is all around us. It's imaginative and funny and cool. But what is slang in academic terms? What counts as slang and what slang a person knows are socially determined, so, since sociolinguistics examines how language use reflects social identities, a sociolinguistic lens can shed much light on this interesting phenomenon. And in turn, slang can help us to better understand our sociolinguistic world. In this course, we'll examine slang by applying and comparing sociolinguistic concepts such as gendered language, dialects, politeness, and code-switching.

Thank you,

Sara
