GEOL 497W/597W: Geochemistry of the Solar System

Credits: 4
TR 9-11

Prerequisites: Geol 311 or 406

CRNs: 24001 & 24002



Course Description:

This course will focus on our understanding of the main processes leading to the chemical compositions of terrestrial planets, the Moon, meteorites, asteroids, comets and exoplanets. Topics include the origin of the elements (nucleosynthesis), condensation of the solar nebula, formation and differentiation of planetary bodies, formation of atmospheres and oceans, and alteration due to impacts and space weathering. We will also discuss recent scientific publications in cosmochemistry and current models of the solar system formation and evolution.
