Dear undergrad and grad students,
I will echo Megan and Jake's announcement. Every year the AEG Puget Sound Chapter has a Student Night to celebrate student research. It is comfortable environment to practice presenting your research, whether it is in progress or completed. You can mingle with professional geologists and use it as an opportunity to market yourself for potential employment. There will be a van going down to the event so let's fill it up and show them that WWU is where it is happening!

Dear AEG Puget Sound Members and Friends
Here's a reminder and update on our April 17 meeting at Art Marble 21. See re-send end of April Newsletter for more details.
We will have our traditional student talks and we are accepting additional presentation proposals (reply to this email or see attached announcement).
Note: We are adding an exciting speaker to the event, Tom Badger. Tom is a major figure in this state's engineering geology community bringing great lessons to share with students and practitioners alike. He will speak for about 30 minutes and will be followed by our student presenters' short summaries before we head to the posters. See details below.

"Hillslopes and Highways"
Tom Badger (Wash DOT retired)
Tom Badger, retired Chief Engineering Geologist for Washington State Department of Transportation (Wash DOT), will reflect on his career in rock slopes, hillslopes, and keeping Washington highways safe. Tom was a key person in the rock stabilization work on I-90 in Snoqualmie Pass that began after multiple, some-fatal slope failures temporarily shut down this key artery in 2005 and led to a state-wide assessment of rock hazards along highways.
Tom is a BS graduate of WWU and did his MS in Geological Engineering at the University of Nevada Reno in 2002. He had a 32-year career at Wash DOT specializing in assessment and mitigation of slope hazards, soil and rock slope engineering, and risk management for transportation infrastructure. He has taught courses at UW, published and lectured extensively on these topics, and he consults part time for the Portland-based firm, Landslide Technology. He is a licensed engineering geologist, hydrogeologist, and civil engineer.
Special thanks to our Student Night Sponsor, Holocene Drilling!
