Hello!

This may already be on the departments radar, but I just wanted to share that the USGS Cascades Volcano Observatory will be holding an open house on Saturday, May 10th. While I know CVO is quite a drive from Bellingham, I wanted to make sure anyone who was interested knew about the event and is more than welcome to attend. Please share as you see fit.

Event Details

Spring of 2025 marks the 45th anniversary of the reawakening of Mount St. Helens and the onset of volcanic eruptions from 1980 to 1986. In commemoration, the USGS Cascades Volcano Observatory will open its doors to the public on Saturday, May 10, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. All ages are welcome to attend this free, family-friendly, one-day event.
Visitors can talk to volcanologists about research, learn about the May 18, 1980, eruption of Mount St. Helens, and see different types of instruments and sensors used to monitor activity. Scientists will demonstrate monitoring equipment like thermal imaging, earthquake detection, and GPS to track changes on the surface of a volcano. The robotic arm will be operating in the sediment laboratory and scientists will talk about how they collect and process sediments. Learn more about landslides and lahars, and other volcano hazards, and whether you live, work, or play in a hazard zone. There will be hands-on science activities and many demonstrations.
